You, O Lord, are my lamp;
my God, you make my darkness bright.
With you I will break down an enclosure;
with the help of my God I will scale any wall.
Psalm 18:29-30
As my family continues through the hard struggle of waiting for tests to determine just how hard the struggle we face - and wow! that’s a lot of struggle there - the psalm presents to me the image of a wall. In this case, many walls.
And beneath these walls are friends, the many, many people whom God has sent into our lives.
They come from all over the world. They stand ready at the base of each wall, ready to give us a leg up. They come in many forms.
A clerk who discovers an unassigned machine. An old lady who tells her tale of survival. A publican who offers “a class and a chat.” Two children learning how a typewriter works. An Iowa steam engine festival. Chance meetings on the road, the street, the beach.
And so many more. Each in their own way, a light in the darkness, a leg up at the base of a wall.
Today I am grateful for the numbers, the groups, the hordes that God sends our way. I am grateful for this economy of kindness which runs the reign of God.
God bless you all to live in this world.
